Coinbase states that the personal information of customers is stolen in the data violation

Crypto Giant Coinbase confirmed that his systems were violated and the customer data were stolen, including the identity documents issued by the government.

In a deposit legally requested with US regulators, Coinbase said that a hacker this week told the company that he had obtained information on customer accounts and requested money from the company in exchange for not having published the stolen data.

Coinbase said that the hacker “obtained this information by paying more contractors or employees who work in support roles outside the United States to collect information from the Coinbase internal systems to which they had access to carry out their work responsibilities”. The support staff is no longer employed, the company said.

The deposit stated that the Coinbase systems found the harmful activity “in the previous months” and that it “warned customers whose information has been potentially accessible in order to prevent the improper use of any compromised information”.

Coinbase said he won’t pay the hacker redemption. According to a social post by CEO Brian Armstrong, hackers requested $ 20 million from the company.

The company said that the hacker stole the names of customers, postal and e-mail addresses, telephone numbers and the last four figures of the social security numbers of users. The hacker has also taken the masked bank account numbers and some banking identifiers, as well as identity documents issued by the customers’ government, such as driving licenses and passports. The stolen data also include data on the balance of the account and transactions stories.

The company has also said that some business data, such as internal documentation, were stolen during the violation.

In a blog post, Coinbase said that the violation affects less than 1% of its customers. Coinbase has over 100 million customers starting from 2022, according to the company’s website.

Coinbase has declared to foresee costs from approximately $ 180 million to $ 400 million relating to the reclamation of accidents and reimbursements of customers.

A coinbase spokesman did not immediately respond to Techcrunch’s comment request.
