Openai launches the code, an AI coding agent, in chatgpt

Openii announced on Friday that he is launching a research preview of the code, the coding agent to the most capable of the company.

The Codex is powered by Codex-1, a version of the O3 of the Company’s reasoning model optimized for software engineering activities. Openii says that Codex-1 produces “clean” code compared to O3, adheres more precisely to the instructions and will make it the testively test on its code until the results are achieved.

The code agent is performed on a virtual computer and sandbox in the cloud. By connecting with GitHub, the Codex environment can be preloaded with the code repositories. Openii says that the coding agent will use from one to 30 minutes to write simple features, correct the bugs, answer questions based on the code and perform tests, among other activities.

The codex can manage more software engineering activities at the same time, says Openi and does not limit users to access your computer and browser while running.

Codex is launching today starting from subscribers to Chatgpt Pro, Enterprise and Team. Openai says that users will have “generous access” to the code to start, but in the coming weeks the company will implement the rate limits for the tool. Users will therefore have the opportunity to purchase additional credits to use the code, a spokesperson for Openii says to Techcrunch.

Openi provides to expand access to the code to Chatgpt Plus and Ed users soon.

The tools for software engineers, also known as vibrations, have increased in popularity in recent months. The CEO of Google and Microsoft say that about 30% of the code of their companies is now written by AI. In February, Anthropic released his agent coding tool, Claude Code and in April, Google updated her AI coding assistant, Gemini Code Assist, with more agents.

All that vibrant coding has made the activities behind the coding platforms to some of the fastest growth of technology. The cursor, among the coding tools to the most popular, has reached annualized revenues of about $ 300 million in April and according to what reports it is raising new funds to an evaluation of $ 9 billion.

Now, Openi wants a piece of cake. According to reports, the chatgpt manufacturer closed with an agreement to acquire Windsurf, the developer behind another popular AI coding platform, for $ 3 billion. The launch of the code shows very clearly that Openi is building its own coding tools, moreover.

Users with access to the code can find the tool in the chatgpt sidebar and assign the new agent coding activities by typing a prompt and click on the “Code” button. Users can also ask questions about their code base and click the “Ask” button. Under the push bar, users can see other activities that have assigned the code to carry out and monitor their progress.

In a briefing before the launch of Codex, the head of the research of the agents of Openi, Josh Tobin, told Techcrunch that the company in the end wants its coding agents to act as “virtual teammates”, completing the tasks that require human engineers “hours or even days”. Openii says that he is already using the code internally to download repetitive activities, new features of scaffolding and draft documentation.

The protagonist of the Openii product Alexander Alexicos states that many security works for the O3 model of the company also apply to the code. In a blog post, Openai says that the code will reliably refuse requests to develop “harmful software”. In addition, the code operates in an environment with air escapement, without wider access to the internet or external bees. This limits how dangerous code can be in the hands of a bad actor, but it can also hinder its usefulness.

It is worth noting that AI coding agents, just like all generative artificial intelligence systems, are subject to errors. A recent Microsoft study has discovered that the coding models to the leaders of the sector, such as Claude 3.7 Sonnet and O3-Mini, have fought for debuts in a reliable way. However, this does not seem to dampen the excitement of investors in these tools.

Openi is also updating the CLI code, the Open Source coding agent has recently launched the company that works in your terminal, with a version of its O4-Mini model optimized for software engineering. That model is now the default setting in the CLE Codex and will be available in Openi’s API for $ 1.50 for 1 m input token (about 750,000 words, more than the entire lord of the Lord of the Rings Book) and $ 6 for 1 million output token.

The launch of Codex marks the latest effort by Openai to strengthen chatgpt with other products in addition to the notorious chatbot. In the last year, Openii has added priority access to the video platform AI of the company, Sora, to her research agent, to deep research, as well as to her web navigation agent, operator, as benefits for subscribers.

These offers could encourage multiple users to register for a chatgpt subscription and, in the case of the code in particular, convince existing subscribers to pay more money to Opens for an increase in the limits of the rates.
