Patreon app can now accept web payments after the United States App Store changes

The Creator Patreon platform has launched an updated version of its app which now allows users to make purchases through the web, in the wake of the Apple-Epic Court sentence that forced Apple to allow App developers to include connections to alternative payment forms without being subject to the Apple commission.

Previously, in the 125.4.1 version of Patreon’s IOS app, users who wanted to register for the subscription plan of a creator should have done it using Apple’s in-app purchases. See below:

In the updated version issued on Monday (version 125.5.0), users now have the possibility to make a purchase via the web, where they can choose to pay with other payment methods, including credit cards, we are and Paypal, as well as with Apple Pay.

The option to use the Apple’s in-app purchases, in the meantime, is shown only in a very small text under the largest and most daring “join” button. This change will probably direct more customers to pay through the Patreon website instead of the Apple’s in-app purchases.

Reached for a comment, Patreon confirmed that the update of the app has been approved and is now launching US users.

Users who update their app should see the new checkout experience within 24 hours, the company told Techcrunch. However, the company previously declared that it had sent an update to Apple for the approval that would have allowed the approval of the updating of the update.

These changes follow a significant victory in a legal battle fought by the Fortnite Epic Games manufacturer who affects how app developers can develop payments on iOS.

On April 30, a United States Court established that Apple is no longer authorized to prevent App developers from connecting to alternative payment mechanisms within their apps while collecting a commission. As a result, Apple had to update the guidelines for the developers of the App Store for US developers and to accept recently renewed apps, such as Spotify and the Amazon Kindle app, which are now connected to external websites where consumers can choose to pay the app publishers directly.

Patreon was also ready to celebrate the victory at that moment, noting that the creators would now be able to keep more money if they had not had to pay Apple his commission for purchases.

In another recent update shared with his community, Patreon said that his subscription turnover transition plan was suspended. Last August, Patreon said that Apple had given him a deadline to pass all the creators to the Apple in-app purchase system by November 2025 or the removal of the risk from the App Store. Now, the company believes that this change will no longer be necessary.

“This is still a development situation, but we are going on claiming that the expiry of November 2025 for all Patreon creators to move on to the invoice by subscription is no longer necessary,” said the company in an update to a support document and in a discord shared with its creators. “While further information could arrive that alter the Apple requirements for Patreon’s iOS app, we are optimistic that this sentence will give us further flexibility in the way we support the creators on Legacy billing models. However, for now, creators still have to be on the billing of the subscription to be able to accept payments through the Patreon iOS app”, says the post.

In the meantime, Patreon still offers to help all the creators who want to move on to a subscription billing.
